Historically, Sabah’s first marathon was way back held in 1984 and was called the Daily Express Sabah Marathon back then. For the next 23 years Sabah wouldn’t see another marathon.(for reasons I’m not sure of) Then, suddenly in 2008, Sabah once more appeared on the marathon map when the Borneo International Marathon (BIM) was held for the first time, offering categories for 10km, 21km and 42km runners which was well applaud by the running community . It attracted 529 runners that year. Since then the BIM has grown in size and stature and now is a notable marathon on the South East Asian marathon calendar that attracts runners from far and wide which is good start considering the trend of running events in Malaysia has boomed.
Today in 2017, UNICEF will partner with Borneo International Marathon(BIM) marking the 10th edition since 2008 (uncounted 1984). There would a special distance for the persons with disabilities which is kindda good.
This would also remark my 1st ever marathon event in BORNEO, and also in Kota Kinabalu. As I’ve been here back in 2013, this will remark my 4th time to this beautiful part of Malaysia. My first time to Sabah will always be remembered as my 1st BORNEO diving trip with my awesome dive buddies.
