During the weekend I had a new project! It was to revive back my 8year old PC  (that’s personal computer for kiddos these days)

I own a PC back from my study  time in 2003. It was my 2nd PC after my 1st in 99. Was working fine all the way till early this year. And yet i’ve never owned a laptop. Been using 3 different laptops from my 3 MNC companies that I’ve worked so far :p At end of the tenues i always transfer my personal files to my PC. That’s why i still feel not in need to own my own Laptop.

My Pc problem - After a while it always seem to shutdown by itself. So , I suspected that the processor was overheating.

My plan was to takeoff the heatsink and processor and reassemble it back. On top of that I also plan to clean the inside of it and manage the cables to be more tidy. It’s not as difficult as you might think. I’ve done this before but  I hardly recall when was the last time i did it.

No, these are not drugs :p if you open a heatsink and processor, this is the thelmal paste that needs to be used to glue the heatsink and the processor.

Purpose of thermal paste ? improves the efficiency of a heatsink by filling air gaps that occur when the imperfectly flat and smooth surface of a heat generating component is pressed against the similar surface of a heatsink (thanks wiki , you took the words out of my mouth :p)

My Old PC Specs. (that time was great, now its so outdated)
processor – Pentium 4. 2.4C (yeah with hyper trading) :p
RAM – 1.5G
Grafic card – Nividea 128MB
Hdd – 200G seagate + 500G WD + 500G Samsung. + Now i just bought a 500G buffalo. ( i just feel 1 Tera way too big for an external )

My Step by Step SOLUTION :-
1) Went to Digital Mall in PJ >
i) Bought Thermal Paste/heat paste (its something to glue the processor and the heatsink)= RM5. (ii and iii are not related to the solution :p )
ii) also bought some extra stuff, my 1st wireless mouse(yes 1st! haha) , + 1 ide cable , 1 Pioneer DVD writer internal which i still find expensive at rm108.
iii) also bought an external hdd 500G buffalo antishock (usb3), heck my pc only usb2(also with an external card which i bougth a couple years ago)

2) Open my PC case using a Philip screw driver. Started to take off all my “Acbel” PSU(power supply cables) from the devices/components in the PC.

3) Take off the RAM from its slots

4) Take off my Graphic Card from the slot

5) Take off my Cooler Master Jet7 fan (the above is the heatsink fan, the copper is the heatsink, to those who might not know, it depends on what you use, mine is just an add on)

6) Gently take out my heatsink from the motherboard (between the heatsink and the motherboard is the processor(a small 1 1/2 inch square cip)

7) Gently take out my P4 2.4C (last time i bought it for rm600) processor from my motherboard socket 478. Remember the position when u take out (but if u forget, later on u can see that one edge has no pins on the board or the processor,so be careful)

8 ) Clean the top of the processor with a tissue+clean cloth. (its the old thermal paste)

9) Go to the store room and take a vacuum cleaner. (this is also a good time to borrow from your cute neighbor,that’s if you have any :p)

10) Start to vacuum my heatsink (between the metals) + also blowed a bit to double check that no dusk are left. You can also soak in a pale of plain water but
it would take you somewhile to get it dry. So i skipped the water part (unless you heat sink is super dirty) Just view it between the copper.

11) + I also vacuumed the rest on the inside of the PC to get rid of all the dusk collected throughout the years. Its also good to have small paint brush to assist this cleanup session.

12) Carefully put the processor back into the motherboard socket. Notice there’s a small dot indicating there’s no pin on that edge. I double check the pins with the motherboard holes. One edge doesn’t have 1 hole, so don’t force the processor in. If it doesn’t fit just double check the pins accordingly.

12) Take the thermal paste and put the thermal paste on the processor gently.

13) Use a cotton bud to spread the thermal paste to the whole top of the processor. You can also use your fingers if you want to, no harm.(just be sure to wash it before your next meal)

14) Take the heatsink and place in on top of the processor.

15) Close the heatsink clip gently to tighten the heatsink.

16) Put on the Jet7 heatsink fan or/whatever fan that you have on top of the heatsink and screw it tight.

17) Reassemble all the PSU cables to the appropriate components.

18) Assemble all you input/output devices to the PC(example monitor/mouse/keyboard/power cable)

19) Start the PC > observe the behavior of the PC.

Expected result : No unscheduled shutdowns occur anymore. PC is up and working well! ^_^ TADAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA……..

Introduction

One of my biggest obsessions or shall i say interest is Geography. Ever since secondary school I find that Geography is an interesting subject and it always facinates me to know what the worlds looks like and what people at the other side of the sea do. Come to think about it, I even scored in most test/exams for geography. Even remembered my geog teacher’s name, Mr Suhaimi.(was also our computer teacher)….so many things influence by him without me realizing it, even till the moment I’m writing this.

With Geography, come along my interest in maps, aviation(not a big surprise) and  also my all time passion Traveling. Nowadays people own GPS or GPRS or whatever you guys call it, from their mobiles and so…..Since I don’t own any, I prefer surfing the net using google maps and wikimapia which I use a lot. A new or should I saw revived tool that I fancy nowdays Google Earth… (latest version is google earth 6)

So What’s google Earth? You might ask.

Basically Google Earth  is a Globe or 3D map but  withe even more interactive and interesting then google maps and wikimapia. Google Earth is a virtual globe, map and geographical information program that has a lot of cool features that is simply awesome! You got to try it yourself to believe it or see the benefits.

How does it look like? Let me share you guys some youtube clips. My apologies I’ve no time to create my own. Hope this would be sufficient.

How to install google earth on windows platform?

2) Click on the “Download Google Earth 6″ Button

3) Agree and download >

4) Save the “GoogleEarthSetup.exe” >

5) Run the “GoogleEarthSetup.exe” to Install google earth

6) Follow the instructions ,and launch the google earth…TADAAAAAAAAAAA.

Any Cool Features? You can search a site ,  Just google hawaii for example.then view pictures submitted by viewers.You can also submit your own photos from your vacations or places that you are staying(via the panoramio upload your photos feature)! Secondly you can use the street view..(basically yo just drag the person icon above the zoom + – button to your map that you want to view the street view….you can also see diving spots or use the ocean mode…Under ocean mode there’s explore the ocean, shipwrecks, marine protected areas, animal tracking and much more…You can even toggle between daytime and night time by using the show sunlight option…

So, what do you guys think about it? cool huh? Let’s play with Google Earth 6 together!

picom pc fair 2010 (II) schedule

What ? Picom PC Fair (malaysia’s largest Computer Fair)

Where? KL Convention Centre. Walking distance from KLCC. You can park at aquaria, Suria KLCC, or even at surrounding areas.

My Wish List
i)new Laptop @ lappy for my cute sis. Lenovo/thinkpad are on my mind. Yet to decide.
ii)EOS550D.
iii)Some video Camera <- purely for my knowledge, don’t have any funds for this at all!

Yeah, PC Fair is back!  Reason of me mentioning of this is because I’m planning, just planning to survey on EOS550D and also buying a new laptop for my sis. I’ve been dragging this for a long time. Priority would be on the laptop first. Any recommendations?

Seems it’s a while since I’ve updated my hardware knowledge. Maybe its time to visit my favorite Lowyat Plaza. (Used to go there like every weekend during my University days) Nowadays I go to digital mall to avoid the traffic. Although the prices are like RM20-30 higher.

As for the DSLR, I’m actually waiting for end of 2010 for the price to drop. I’m hoping to get the EOS550D for RM2800 + include some better lenses then the kit lenses. Some tele lenses maybe. I’m still not sure to wait till end of year or to get before the Singapore GP. A friend of mine in Jakarta mentioned of the possibility of having extra tickets so I just might go there. It’s difficult to have a bunch of wish list with so little money to spend. But I think my travel photo’s would increase significantly by having the DSLR.

yup, The 3rd PC Fair of 2009…..It’s currently happening now at Kuala Lumpur Convention Center , next to KLCC…from 11am till 9pm…….schedule as below

I did go there yesterday nite to survey + collect the brochures…….altought with no budget, I did survey some of the things that were in my wishlist…huhu..

1) Asus ePC netbook……RM1500 +/-

2) Canon EOS 500D – RM 3199

other then then I just observe new items in the market……..have u guys seen a hardisk player? haha….hdmi hardisk/multiple player? and how about a 3D LCD monitor? yup, 3D with the specs like the ones u watch in the cinemas…saw one from viewsonic…20 inch 1st 3d lcd, cost around RM2300……..what else, let me see…….36Gig thumbdrive cost around RM230…..1st time I saw P1 wimax at PC Fair(maybe last PC Fair I was no there)….hmm….the new altec lancing range…….what I didnt notice is any place which had PC Modding….i mean the bling2 PCs…….Last time when I was a student I used to take time to observe these sorts of things…….Maybe the fact of not having money or any budget to buy anything makes the window shopping boring…….Normally I window shop with the option to buy….but now, theres no option..haha…..hope my pocket will get thicker the next PC Fair around , next march 2010..haha!
